Selected by Velvet as Best Picture of 1978 by Kal Lahue, one of only two top tens that
superior critic ever did. This was the banner year for adult films, as more films from 1978
are rated superior or superlative than any other.
The plot of SKIN FLICKS involves Tony Hudson as an adult filmmaker ten days behind schedule on his latest epic, searching for the perfect ending while forced to listen to the ravings of his financial backer, played by Damiano.
The plot makes sense, it progresses to a logical conclusion, and by its very nature of
design, allows for the extensive use of sex scenes. I am truly touched by the way Heather
Young plays to perfection the role of a young girl getting started in the adult business. Her
sex scene with Herschel Savage is classic poetic tenderness with more than a ring of truth.
Beth Anna, in contrast, is just the opposite — a sleek, sexy veteran of the industry. The
balance between sex and story is complemented by the fine acting of the cast. Gillis is his
usual best as a repulsive rapist leching after Sharon Mitchell.
Damiano has crafted an excellent and fairly realistic look into the world of sex films being
made, with all the attendant trappings and pitfalls offered in a matter of fact manner. One
of his five best ever.
